50 YEARS OF GLOSTER

50 years. It sounds like a lifetime, yet in many ways it comes around in the blink of an eye...

We first started making furniture exactly fifty years ago in West Africa in 1960. Firstly just for local market consumption but then, when we realised we were actually quite good at it, for export to Europe. From the start we were always both environmentally and ethically aware - we even used the discarded branches and tree stumps, which would otherwise have been burnt, to make the smaller components.

Within ten years we became the largest furniture producer in Africa supplying components and finished furniture to many of the top indoor brands in Europe.

Thirty years ago, in 1981, we started the Gloster brand. From quite humble roots, we manufactured traditional teak garden benches in Bristol, England and once again were soon exporting our furniture all around the world. In the 1970’s we transferred our African factory’s expertise to Asia so that we could have access to the plantation grown teak that was only available in Indonesia.

Over the 80’s and 90’s Gloster grew to be the principle high end world wide brand for teak outdoor furniture. At the end of the 1990’s Gloster diversified into different types of furniture and now, fifty years since we started, we are worldwide leaders in teak, woven, aluminium, stainless steel and now outdoor lounge furniture.

Many competitors have come and gone in this time, yet Gloster, just like our furniture, endures. And, as it was right at the start, we remain committed to green and ethical policies in everything we do.

We have made over 10 million pieces of furniture in the last fifty years and our furniture can be found in over 50 countries. During this time we have manufactured in 10 different countries, worked with over 20 designers from 5 continents and used the most bewildering array of timbers and materials to produce some of the finest indoor and outdoor furniture. Each piece has been carefully designed and expertly manufactured to bring long lasting pleasure and enjoyment to all that use it.

We are glad you can join in our 50th birthday celebration and look forward with us to the next fifty years.

CLUB

Inspired by the best of 1930’s retro design, Club combines an enduring, classic style with our pioneering outdoor lounge cushion technology. Taking its cues from the Art Deco movement, Club is a striking yet highly practical modular seating system that is both unique yet instantly recogniseable in appearance.

Designed by the American designer, Philip Behrens, like all the best ideas Club is simple yet extremely flexible. Take a centre unit, attach an arm and it becomes an end unit. Attach two arms and you have a lounge chair. Add in a corner unit and you can build a seating system to fit an area of almost any size and shape. Available in either Mercury or Ivory colour, a freestanding ottoman and two sizes of side table complete the collection.

CLOUD

Designed by the award-winning, London based designer Mark Gabbertas and building on the success of the Cloud modular seating system launched last year, 2010 sees the introduction of several new Cloud items, designed to both complement and extend this ground-breaking collection of outdoor lounge furniture.

The matching Cloud dining chair is as beautiful and as practical as the Cloud seating units, using the same outdoor lounge cushion technology to create a fully upholstered outdoor dining chair. And, just in case Cloud wasn’t flexible enough already, the addition of two sizes of dual- height coffee tables enables the low seating units to be transformed into an informal dining set, with practical HPL tables tops in three colours perfectly complementing the fabrics.

BLOC

Combining luxury with the ultimate in simplicity, Bloc is a strikingly geometric interpretation of the outdoor lounge trend. One basic 90cm square dimension common to all 5 pieces ensures the application of Bloc to any environment is as easy as it is varied.

London based designer Mark Gabbertas has combined textured powder-coated aluminium frames with sizeable blocks of upholstered cushions, creating a remarkable juxtaposition of tactile comfort and visual integrity.

Concealed beneath its striking yet sumptuous exterior, Bloc applies the very latest fabric and cushion technology to ensure flawless performance in any outdoor environment. Completing the collection are two coffee tables at either seat height or frame height.

COLOUR OPTIONS

Bloc is also available in two contrasting colours. The dark colour way features Cinder colour powder coated frames with Mercury fabric and Black HPL table tops. The light colour way features White colour powder coated frames with Ivory fabric and White HPL table tops.

FUSION

Hard-wearing stainless steel profiles and highly tailored slings seamlessly come together within a fresh yet distinctive silhouette. Stunning in their simplicity, Fusion chairs are the ideal complement to our extensive range of Kore dining tables, combining design and practicality in one.

2010 sees the addition of stunning teak versions of the popular sling chairs and a new folding chair & table designed especially for use on balconies and yachts.

To celebrate our 50th birthday, we created the Fusion Teak Dining Chairs as our Anniversary pieces. We believe these chairs sum up the best of everything Gloster stands for - understated, timeless design, expert craftsmanship and unparalleled attention to detail. A future classic?

We’ll only know for sure in 50 years time...

ROMA

The simple yet elegant ‘cross’ signature of the new Roma collection can trace its heritage as far back as Roman times. Now brought right up to date by Danish architect, Povl Eskildsen, this simple yet reassuringly familiar design forms the hallmark of the entire Roma collection – from dining through to deep seating.

Available in either a refreshing, Crystal White finish or a more subdued, matt Gunmetal colour-way, Roma combines practical, fully welded powder coated frames with tactile table tops in either slatted teak or satin finish glass. Elegant, tailored cushions complete the deep seating items providing both comfort and an extra element of style.

Roma Occasional Tables To complement the deep seating items above, we will also be launching a Roma Coffee Table and Side Table. Like the Roma dining tables, both occasional tables will be available with a choice of either slatted teak or glass table tops.

COLOUR OPTIONS

Roma is also available in two contrasting colours. The light colour way features Crystal White powder coated frames with Teak or White polished finish glass table tops. The alternative, dark colour way features Gunmetal powder coated frames with Teak or Slate satin finish glass table tops.

HAVANA

Taking the creative nuances from Povl Eskildsen's beautifully natural Havana collection, this popular line has been further extended for the 2011 season with the addition of two dining tables, a striking curved dining bench and occasional tables.

Teaming naturally textured, braided arms with variegated willow coloured all weather wicker over a cleverly designed 'invisible' powder coated aluminium frame, the new Havana dining products offer all the design details of the classic items, with the added bonus of enhanced seating flexibility.

AZORE

Proving that form and function can truly exist in harmony, Azore by Povl Eskildsen of Denmark, signifies a new era in aluminium furniture.

The stylishly angled oval frame is powdercoated in a subtly textured slate, frost, or tungsten finish, accompanied by matching slings and contrasting arms. New additions for 2011 include a woven version of the popular stacking chair and a multiposition reclining chair and footstool.

2011 also sees the introduction of hardwearing and practical HPL tops for all three sizes of dining table.

Extensively used in architectural applications, weather resistant Trespa Meteon HPL (High Pressure Laminate) table tops are both tough, practical and easy to clean. Trespa is extremely weather resistant. Neither sun, rain nor moisture have any effect on the panel's surface or core. Both the UV resistance and colour stability comply with the highest classifications.

The smooth panel has a pore free structure, ensuring no dirt can accumulate. Trespa is also completely unaffected by cleaning agents or strong organic solvents. and its high tensile strength guarantees high impact resistance. The dimensional stability and workability of Trespa is comparable to those of hardwood, however, Trespa table tops are not affected by moisture and are not susceptible to weathering, mould or rot.

SQUARE

Also by Povl Eskildsen, Square brings contemporary, light weight lines to solid teak construction.

Fine table tops are teamed with massive, solid teak legs to give a contemporary twist to the traditional slatted teak dining table.

New for 2011 are two new sizes of dining table and two sizes of stylish backless benches. Square tables are the ideal complement to wide range of Gloster dining chairs, especially the Havana chairs, whose rustic style contrasts perfectly with the clean, sharp lines of the tables.
